Fully Restored 1952 Old Town Wood-Canvas Canoe
16' long "Heavy Water" Old Town cedar-canvas canoe from 1952.
The canoe has been restored to near new condition.
The restoration and repair included; Replacing broken ribs, replacing broken planking, rebuilding stem and gunwale ends that were lost to rot, new decks, new outer gunwales, new canvas and paint, new stembands, and refinishing of the interior with new varnish.
The canoe is fully functional for use on the water for those who are interested in traditional canoeing.
It would also make a great display piece for a home or cabin.
The varnished cedar of the interior has taken on a dark, glowing patina that only age can bring, and the beautiful, sweeping lines of this century-old design turn the heads of even those normally uninterested in boats or canoes.
A classic cedar-canvas canoe always impresses and draws compliments, and represents an important piece of North American history as the premier vehicle of trade and exploration over much of the continent prior to and even long after the Industrial Revolution.
The wood-canvas canoe building design evolved directly from the elegant and highly functional birchbark craft of the Native Americans, and no other small watercraft is equal to it in terms of versatility, durability, functionality, and beauty.
This particular canoe is numbered 156,999 from the Old Town Canoe Company of Maine.
A copy of the original build sheet is included with the canoe, courtesy of The Wooden Canoe Heritage Association.
The canoe has no seats,(as it was before the restoration, and as the natives would have had it) but seats can be made on request.
It is outfitted with a keel and is built heavier than average canoes, with thicker ribs and planking for added durability.
The ribs are of white cedar, the thwarts, inner gunwales, and keel are of spruce, and the outer gunwales are made of white ash.
The planking and replacement decks are made of western red cedar.
The restoration was completed in the winter or 2011-2012.
